Morning: History and Monuments in the center of Leiria

Leiria Castle

Ready to get started? Our starting point for this day is the fantastic medieval castle of Leiria. Perched on a hill with a unique view of the city, this castle was founded by King Afonso Henriques in the 12th century.

Here you can explore its walls, the keep and the Royal Palace, where you'll find the iconic window with a unique view of the city. Along the way, you can use the various information boards to get detailed information about the sites, or book one of our tours in Leiria!

Leiria Cathedral and St. Peter's Church

When you get down from the castle, walk to the Cathedral of Leiria, which is also known as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. This outstanding example of Mannerist architecture in Portugal was founded in the 16th century. Close by you'll also find the Church of São Pedro. This dates from the 12th century and is the only Romanesque church in the city. In the days when the writer Eça de Queirós roamed the streets of the city, this church was a theater; today it is a museum.

Lunch break...

Leiria offers good solutions for a gastronomic break. Between the most typical and a more contemporary approach, the choice may not be easy.

Here are two different approaches: firstly, the more typical, where we highlight the Pinheiro restaurant, with its lamb stew and seafood rice being the most popular options, or the Mata Bicho restaurant, right in the historic center of Leiria, with a modern and creative menu that focuses on local products.

Paper Mill

After lunch, continue your tour of Leiria with a visit to the Paper Mill. This museum is located on the banks of the River Lis. This is where handmade paper was produced. This is a great activity to do with the family.

Camões Garden and the River Lis

Next, one of the most emblematic places to relax in the city is the Jardim de Camões. Here you'll find sculptures, shaded benches and you can calmly sip your coffee and watch the rhythm of the city, all with the River Lis in the background.

Rodrigues Lobo Square

No visit to Leiria is complete without passing through Rodrigues Lobo Square, the heart of the historic center. Surrounded by buildings with colorful balconies, cafés and local stores. You can also take the opportunity to explore the old Jewish quarter right next door.

Bonús: Leiria Museum or the MiMO Museum

If at the end of the day the power bar is still in good condition, then visit the Leiria Museum and get to know the city's history and culture even better. The Museum of the Moving Image (MIMO), dedicated to the history of cinema and audiovisual media, is also an excellent option, especially if you're a fan of cinema and technology.
